Cake With Differend F-Stops

Posted on 2010-12-202021-10-19

Using a three candescent 35w 3300K lights at 1.5m a series of 8 foto’s were taken of a nice birthday cake. The timing ranged from 0.8 seconds to 1/125 of a second. The corresponding aperture ranged from 1.6 to 16 (I forgot to do the 1.2 which would have taken 1/200 of a second). The focal point is the center of the bow. Note the drastic changes in the shallowness of the DoF (depth of field). For a magazine the f/4.5 would be esthetically pleasing, the f/16 is best for viewing the details, the f/1.6 would work better on a tombstone or something where the eye needed strong guidance.

1/125 f/1.6
1/2 f/13
.8″ f/16
1/60 f/2.2
1/30 f/3.2
1/15 f/4.5
1/8 f/6.3
1/4 f/9
